19th of January 2007 - Back flying !!!! After some time off, finally going back to the flying field

What's New ? Not anything major there. Mainly some Chinese imports and Multiplex planes with the forever going Zagi type ones. Most motors are now brushless, with very cheap options, again from China.

Got new Pilots learning on the EasyStar, and... Very strong crash, full speed with a 60 degree angle crash, and.... 5 seconds Cyano Glue and the EasyStar was back on stage !!!! Another crash, very strong again, and absolutely nothing happened to the plane...
Some pilots were suggesting we were making some special adds for how strong the Multiplex Elapor material is :)

All we can say: The Multiplex EasyStar is still the most amazing beginner's plane around !!!!!

31st of December 2006: Happy New Year 2007 to everyone !!!!!!!!

5th of October 2006 - EasyGlider Tips to protect the aileron servos, from Lanny

How many of us, on landing, ripped a servo. When it is only broken and you know it, the impact is bad, but limited. The worse is when you did not notice that one of your ailerons is damaged, as the next flight could be..... not fun.
Lanny decided for the EasyGlider to build a simple, easy to make, system. See the link, worth it !!

2nd of September 2006 - Some news which impacted the web site update....

Yes... I joined the club of Happy Dads... Rafael Plawner was born on the 17th of August and is taking quite some time right now. Of course, I will buy him a new plane for his "birth" day which I will use for now, until he will feel like playing with it too.

Visit to the Quiet Flight Club

Just went today as a guest, to their field and it was really nice. It takes a little time to get adjusted to the surrounding and make proper landings then, but once done, it is a great place to fly on. Landing on fresh grass... Nothing beats that :)

And more important, the guys who fly there are really nice, fun and with a great spirit !! Well, what a club should be about.

23rd of December 2005 - Back into business

Electron was left alone for a little time, as I moved to a new flat. Moving these planes was not a piece of cake. 1 Down in the process, the MagPie structure did not make it till the end alive. All the others are fine

So, it will take a little more time to settle down.

HAPPY Holidays to everyone. More to come soon, but in the mean time, the pictures below are to warm our heart in this winter time (Speaking North Hemisphere, of course...).

18th of November 2005 - Some News

Some comments from Fritz:
I have two Magisters now. One as said with the LA46 (12x6). The other with an AXI2820/10 (12x8) running with 18 (3S6P) LiIon former notebook 18650 cells.
Both have the same towing performance (!) which also is surprising. The electric one is good for 5-6 2 min tows up 150..200m per charge.

The glider btw. was controlled by my 10 years old sun (!). As children are - always impatient - just following was too boring, so he was playing with the glider by "beckoning down" a bit during the flight with the ailerons...

8th of September 2005 - Review of the Multiplex EasyGlider

20th of August 2005 - Review of the EagleTree System Data Flight recorder

As part of the coming review of the EagleTree Wireless Seagull system, this current review covers the Flight Data Recorder, which is comparable to a real plane black box. The main difference is with a real plane black box, is that you would usually use it, when you don't crash your plane... :) and just want to enjoy having the opportunity to review what happened during the flight, or, send the data, live, to the Seagull system

A big entry into the 21st High Tech century

These 2 amazing pieces of hardware will be put under tests during the next few days.

The Flight Data Recorder is installed in the plane and records all the data anyone can think of, while the Seagull, as an option, can not only display, in real time, this data, but also trigger audible alarms that can tell you if you are too slow, too fast, going down to fast, if your battery is running low, etc... More details, videos and pictures to follow.

Link to manufacturer

Coming review of the wireless receiver Seagull system

As in many other tests, the Multiplex EasyGlider is used as easy to manipulate and safe to fly. This initial test is done to see how the system behaves in general.

If you like scale look and scale flight, this plane could really be your next one. Ido Lempert just performed its test flight last week-end. Don't expect full aerobatics on the 1st flight. but still a real pleasure to watch.

NOA AIR is made from Ido's girl child name. Pretty nice name for a plane that with a name like that, should survive anything, even the big flood :)

15th of July 2005 - Recommended item for flying safe: a Frequency Scanner

Tower Hobbies sells this great device, which coupled with an extra antenna can scan continuously the 72 band and detect whoever is using a channel. More info here. This will help to ensure that when you open your radio, you won't crash someone else's plane as well as checking if the channel  you want to use is free.

27th of June 2005 - Windrider EasyGlider Review

The EasyGlider represents 2 different planes. One made by Multiplex, and the other by Windrider. This review is about the one made by Windrider. The plane was supposed to enter the competition for "Most Recommended 1st plane" but since it came without the motor, it can't enter this competition but still can undergo a complete review.

Rene Wallage did the building and review of this EPP plane.

Next will be to try to tow this plane, with the Mulitplex Magister.

23rd of June 2005 - JETI new ESC Programmer and ESC on the Tests

Electronic Speed Controllers were improving
very much in the last few years, with good
choices of features, quality and prices.

Among the top few companies who create
TOP Quality Speed Controllers, JETI comes
with years of experience and innovation.
This time, JETI rocks this little world with
a New ESC Programmer, easy to use and
carry, combined with a new set of ESC.

Can this new line, move JETI from 2nd
to 1st place (See the last ESC comparison
Table) ?

20th of June 2005 - New Section Created "RC Electric Flying History"

This new section started with an open question on the Ezone, and many Ezoners provided so much interesting information that it makes sense to share it in an organized manner. Lot's of innovative and creative people, since about 50 years, contributed to what is Electric RC Flying today. This section is for the pleasure to learn about this part of history, as well as a special recognition to them, for their efforts.

7th of June 2005 - Story of a beginner, with his first plane, on his 1st day flying

Just visited my family and my brother got his 1st RC plane. Of course, What is the trainer to start with...

He followed the basic training, then did some FMS, and then  flew his EasyStar.

He did loops, rolls, inverted, low passes and perfect landings.... I was speechless, never saw anyone not crashing on his 1st day, and his first plane and certainly not doing the type of flight he did...

Gives another round of credits to the EasyStar but I have to say he also killed me, the way he flew the plane, like a pro. I was telling him what to do/not do but I think he really did not need me as it all came natural to him...

Just AMAZING !!! I remember myself, and how many planes I crashed for such a long time

6th of March 2005 - Coming Review: Flight Data Recorder

Who never dreamed to have a black box installed in our flying machines, in order to record, and later graphically display events that happen during the flight. Could be used for plain fun, as it is but for whoever wants to either teach students and show them where they can improve, or someone who actually want to improve his flying capabilities, this seems to be the answer and it goes far beyond this, adding G-Force captures, Altitude, and many more. Review of this item will show how far this goes and how well and precise.

Would you want later on to be able to even see, live, some of this data? EagleTree Systems also provides this device, called the Wireless DashBoard

4th of February 2005 - Pre Take-off Checklist done

This checklist was build in coordination with Ezoners, and worldwide contributions from Electric RC planes flyers. It is intended to provide a short list, with reminders on the critical few items to think about and check, before any take-off.
3 different sizes and 2 different shapes are done, in order to fit in the back of most Radio/Transmitters around while the bigger ones could be glued on some external hard paper or charts.

It was left in a Microsoft Word format as moving it to PDF or GIF decreased the quality when printed. Also, anyone can then customize it if needed, to it's own need.

 Hope this will save
1 or 2 planes around.

24th of January 2005 - How to reduce plane crashes ?

2 Ezone Threads were just started on this topic.

The 1st thread will provide like the most TOP 5, common reasons, and we will try to write some articles to help as much as possible, prevent these

For the 2nd thread, a Check List will be build, in some little time, just the time to gather as much feedback as possible on the Ezone, as what experienced people think on this. Then, this checklist will be build as a PDF and JPG files, for anyone to download and tape, behind their radio.

Hopefully, this will save few planes around.

8th of August 2004 - Coming Article: What can be a recommended first plane for a beginner in R/C Electric

Bernard Chevalier, owner of BungyMania and I, have decided to work together on this project, as it is quite some tests and work, as well as to get several opinions, and appreciations on our conclusions will help to remain as objective as possible..

For this coming article, we will compare a serie of possible candidates, where several criterias will be analyzed and put under the light. Some of the criterias will be:

  • Price

  • Building

  • Flying

  • Repairing

2nd of August 2004 - Reviews to come: 2 PSS models from Combat Air Models

29th of July 2004 - The Multiplex Magister

Multiplex put in this plane a lot of good thinking. A trainer that can be easily build and flown. Strong, yet easy to repair. The plane's parts are a work of art. From the firewall, which accepts most of any motor anyone could think of, to the landing gear, which have some shock absorptions and the towing system, to tow gliders or a nice advertisement band, not mentionning the EXTREME high quality of the decalc.
This plane is an absolute winner. For 115 Euro or $140, this plane, when compared to similar prices competition foam planes or even balsa planes, delivers MUCH MUCH more.

On a scale of 1 to 20, this plane would be very close to the 20.

Ikarus Champion Glider details

Towing test report

The Magister "out of the box" towing mechanism controlled the glider without any problem

Few remarks:
- Glider's structure was too weak to handle the stress
- Magister needs some minimum speed which seems already quite a lot for this glider
- The Magister was Excellent, during all the towing test. Immediately released the glider, after accident, and it had no problem, during all the test.

Conclusions:
- Needs to find a heavier/stronger/faster glider to pull
- Needs to use a longer wire, between the 2 planes, to absorb the tensions
- It is so fun to do, we will try this again, VERY soon, until it will become a routine

Fantastic plane !!!

In short: One of the most AMAZING plane, in such category I had a chance to review.
The Multiplex Magister is a Dream Plane !

28th of July 2004 - Pelikan Piper Cub Parkflyer review done

Easy to build, looks good and flies great ? That's what is said on this plane, as one of the best 1st plane around. Tests will confirm this or not.
Made of Foam, precovered and with some already in place balsa re-inforcements. Landing gear is very light and strong with rudder turning wheel.
Price wise, It is in the Wingo/SoarStar league.

20th of July 2004 - Ryan STA Electric conversion

18th of July 2004 - Pelikan Piper Cub Parkflyer review done

Review done:

  • Flying: Would be ok for a beginner

  • Building: If you are alone, starting with no help. Don't buy this plane. The manual is really bad and building the plane is not ARF as compared to the normal ARF standards

If compared to the Wingo/SoarStar and EasyStar, I feel that the EayStar should be the winner but since I only heard about it, I can't confirm it 100%.

4th of July 2004 - Twinjet, Mirage 2000, Unicorn & Mini Wiesel on the Slope

All the pictures from the Slope Day

What a beautiful day for having there planes out, on the beach near Tel-Aviv.
Did some combat between the Twinjet and the Mirage. At few occasions, the planes hit each others, dived after the hit and we were able to save them, but we did have a crash, where the 2 planes just did not have enough space to recover.
No one hurt. The Twinjet was much heavier than the Mirage 2000. It is real fun, highly recommended !!!!
Note that the Mini Wiesel was extremely fast, much faster than the Twinjet and the Mirage. Really nice to watch.

Needs only the tail, wings (with 1 servo per aileron) and motor to be done then should be ready to go.

19th of June 2004 - Electric R/C Plane flyers meeting in Ashdod

From now on, we will be going every month or every 2 months, to a new, different place, in Israel. All Electric Plane Flyers are welcome to join, on each occasion. For this first meeting, we went to Ashdod, South of Tel-Aviv. The place was ok, but it was very hot and the landing field was not good enough, so it should be better next time. Still, we had a good time and it is a good occasion to meet Electric Flyers that we don't know or don't meet often, except on Forums.

Interested to join for the next Outing: send me an Email at Patrick@plawner.net and you will be contacted then.

10th of May 2004 - TwinSpeedy Low speed, low passes video

The TwinSpeedy remains one of the nicest plane to fly. Easy, precise, fast, fun, and so many more positive things. Its only drawback is that it is not a plane that would enjoy a crash as the foam is purposely light. It is quite difficult to crash it anyway. No tip stall, no bad behavior in any circumstances... In short, still one of the best plane in the fleet, from far away !

9th of May 2004 - New Electric R/C shop in Israel

This shop is owned by Shay Kuglevitch, a person who is actually selling Electric R/C for a long time and who has an extensive knowledge about them. He now build, in the heart of Tel-Aviv, a very nice R/C electric shop, 100% electric dedicated, with lot's of R/C items to choose from, at competitive prices, offering as well services to help to get into the hobby as well as repairs, or even building if you only feel like flying and have no time, or skills, for building.

Shay also runs the Electric R/C club at Arsuf, just few miles north of Tel-Aviv, so it is always convenient to have someone brings to the club the items you need :)

It is a fact that Electric flight is developing in Israel at a big rate, and certainly for a serious part, due to him and his motivation. So here is the big event for all of us who can now have a place to go, to even just look at the nice planes, motors, lion poly batteries, and all the stuff we need.

Shay told me he intends to have part of his site, translated into English, which would be great as some of the planes he sells are really nice and not easy to find on the internet market.

1st of February 2004 - Trick 1000 Review

Learning E3D or stunts used to be complicated, as each crash, using a plane made of balsa, required time to repair as well as skills. It is now possible to learn without the fear of crashes, with this new wave of EPP E3D planes. The plane won't breal anymore, of course, props, and all the electronic are still subjects to crashes, but are well protected by the EPP around. Let's now review one of these planes, that are coming to the market, the Trick 1000 and see if it delivers as well as expected.

28th of January 2004 - January 2004 Award for Overall Best Brushless Speed Controller

ESC BEC comparison charts

  • Some compatibilities issues were reported between ESC and motors, is it still true ?

  • What do you actually get with these Speed Controllers, are there big differences ?

  • Differences in prices ?

  • Support ?

  • Programming Options ?

  • Reliability ?

  • Any blocking issue ?

These few criteria have been reviewed in the following review.

The few ESC BEC tested are:

  • Kontronik SMILE 40-6-12

  • JETI Jes/Advanced/Hacker Master

  • Castle Creations Phoenix 45, new model.

The best Speed Controller will receive the Award for January 2004 Best Overall Speed Controller available.

Special attention was given to spot a bad Speed controller as well. One that should be avoided, as with blocking issues.

22nd of January 2004 - Freezing day, with lot's of wind: Caleb, Swallow and Barak go to the beach

  • Astro 020

  • 8 cell 950 kans or 10 cells

  • Top speed 55 mph (measured by Radar Gun) with 8 cells

  • Weight 22oz

  • 6x4 prop

  • Temp = 15 degrees and the wind was going at 15 mph gusting to 20

  • Comments in this setup: This plane has been wrecked many times but keeps coming back for more, so I took my chances on the lake.....Lake Erie that is...I am just glad I did not have to go swimming!!! whoooooo cold!!!...But she flew like a champ

3 videos:

  1. Flying above the lake (8cells)

  2. Final (8 cells)

  3. Flying with same setup, but on 10 cells

Note from Thor4944 on this 10 cells setup
The 10 cell 1050 kans gives me about 6 to 8 min. full throttle.  But that is WOT all the time.  I cant push it with this plane (astro 020 does not go beyond 20 amps) and I am pushing it right now!!!..so I go at burst.  I get 10 to 13 min. with burst of throttle then letting off.  I could get 20 to 25 just flying around but if I wanna just fly around I want the plane to be lighter......so I use my 8 cell kans. I get 20 to 25 min just floating around......10 to 15 min. aerobatics....

16th of January 2004

  • SoarStar doing loopings Video: The Soarstar is a Wingo twin type of plane. With 8 cells, it flies about 8 minutes and behaves extremely well. First flight is made by an experienced pilot, second by a beginner who flew only 30 minutes before. Pretty impressive to see how nice it goes.

    • Video when flew by an experienced pilot (Windows or Real)

    • Video when flew by a beginner, only 3 flights with the soarstar. (Windows or Real)

  • Trick 1000 Video: This time, tried the Trick 1000 with AXI 2820/10 and 13.5x6.5 prop on 8 cells. Still, it does not hover :( but it behaves quite nicely. Last hope for hovering on 8 cells, next time will be Jeti 30/3 with 12x6 prop. (Windows or Real)

9th of January 2004 - Table that compares Brushless ESC BEC

Coming Soon !

This table will cover a critical point in the combinations. How does the motor starts. Also, some ESC BEC just don't work well with some motors. Among the working ones, some ESC BEC deliver more overall good results, with a wider range of motors, others have many programming capabilities, others have more efficiency, and then price comes into the picture.

At this point, here is the list of the combinations tested: These are the most commonly used ESC BEC with some pretty common motors as well.

ESC BEC

Motors

  • Castle Creations Phoenix 45
  • KONTRONIK SMILE 40-6-12
  • JETI (old and new models 40 Amp)
  • Hacker (waiting for ESC BEC to arrive)
  • AXI - 2 outrunners, 2814/12 and 2820/10

  • Kontronik FUN 400-23

  • Mega 16/15/3

  • JETI 30/3 and 15/4

  • AVEOX 27/26/1.5

  • Hacker (waiting for motor to arrive)

29th of December 2003 - FMA Copilot review starts - Actually, it SAVED my helicopter already today, on its 1st test, from a sure crash.....

Imagine a device, which would be able to control 2 axis, and as soon as you would put the stick to neutral, a plane or helicopter would return immediately to stable horizontal flight. So if you loose sight, or feeling where the plane/heli is going, just leave the stick, and everything will be just fine....

This device exists, and is called the FMA CoPilot.

3 tests will be performed with this Copilot:

  1. On the Corona Helicopter
I was just in the middle of the test flight, when the tail servo had serious problems and the helicopter started to behave in an unexpected way. I lost good sight of it, and control, so I just put the right stick to neutral and landed using the throttle only stick.

Purely AMAZING ! Really. I started the review but what happened to me today says it all.
Video of the test, just before this happened. It is easy to see how fast and precise, the CoPilot takes control, when you need it.

  2. Delta wing plane
Either will be tested on a Zagi or a Twinjet or both. Will see

  3. Rudder/Elevator only plane.
Multiplex MovieStar seems like a good candidate for this and maybe as well a glider.

This Review will cover:

  • Shipping box

  • Setting it up Phase. Easy/Hard ? Time to do it ? Manual quality ?

  • Impact on the general flights ? Calibrations ? Does it take time, each time you fly, to set it up

  • Is it worth the cost ?

  • Videos for the 3 tests done to actually see it in effect

5th of December 2003 - Back from Vacation and ready to start the reviews

Trick 1000 just arrived today, Copilot few days ago. The Corona needs some little thing to be fixed before starting the review. Should arrive any day now.

21st of October 2003 - Coming Reviews

  • Trick 1000: Did you ever dream of learning E3D, but woke up in a nightmare, as you broke so many planes trying to master this ? Well, this nightmare maybe over. The Trick 1000 is designed for E3D, BUT is made of EPP. Meaning endless repairs, with just some little EPOXY 5 minutes. Soon to come and reviewed using AXI motor and Phoenix ESC BEC

  • FMA - Copilot: Device that can save you lot's of $$ and frustration. It controls Pitch and Roll, can be fitted in a regular plane with Rudder/Elevator, or an Elevon plane or an Helicopter. In this review, we will test 2 helicopters, at the same time, one with the FMA-CoPilot, one without.

  • Multiplex latest jewel: The Royal EVO 12 channels, with Frequency Synthetizer. This Radio, pretty new in the US market, already hit Europe for many months and shows pretty unique advanced features.

    • Easy to learn

    • Easy to program

    • Extremely powerful

    • Light and very well build and structured, for very long hours of week-end flying

    • Much more to come within the coming review

The EVO Look&Feel is a little revolution by itself

  • One of the most famous Electric beginner's helicopter: The Corona 120. With fixed pitch rotor, building the Corona is already an unique experience by itself. Discovering the technology behind it, the mechanics engaged to make this work is really entering a special world. Now, flying an helicopter is more complicated than flying a plane, let's see how this will go. As part of this review, we will compare 2 setups, and within these 2, one will fly with the FMA-Copilot, the other without.

5th of June 2003 - Partenavia tested with Gyro - See Video here

This is the Wingo Gyro (read doc here), supposed to maintain the bank angle of the plane, at any time. Actually, it does reduce the plane's sharp reactions, but does not disable completely its tendency to turn or not, due to external factors.

This Gyro controls the 2 ailerons servos, and just counters the balance of the plane, when felt. Other Gyro could feel the angle with the horizon and bring planes back to it, this Gyro does not, it only tries to keep the last desired angle of the plane, and is active mainly when the stick is neutral.

The Gyro did  not do anything major, just seems to prevent sharp moves, but from what I saw today, not worth it. Still, The Partenavia had a fun day :)

Right after the Crash

Back home: "Epoxy and Foam bomb" time

Several hours after the crash: Here comes the New Partenavia

The foam started to grow, from inside the cockpit, and after few minutes, went out as you can see... Amazing product and very useful ! It seems that it expends about 3 times, and while expending, goes into all the possible holes and exits. Then, it becomes very strong, so you can cut it as wished.

22th  April 2003

Web host is closing suddenly in 1 week from now, and just informed all customers of this, today..... so Electron is looking for a new home. Hope it will happen soon. Sorry for any issue that may rise during this period.

19th  April 2003

  • Bandit Video added: First time we can actually see a Bandit, as it is a difficult plane to video (too fast...). It is a "Best of" of all the stunts made during 1 flight

  • Robbe Spitfire Video: This plane is a flying rock. For this flight, the plane was like a wild horse, doing whatever it wanted, and having this "Sharp left turn" coming randomly... Ended up with broken tail and another bad flight on its record.... BAD PLANE !!! Well, anyway it is not sold anymore...

  • TwinStar video: Remember this person who crashed his TwinStar, 2 weeks ago (see the video of it here), this is now his flight, and you will see the huge progress. Very sedate flights but good flights ! The TwinStar is definitively a winner plane

Balloon Party
Ball Trap Party
Coming

Using helium balloon as mice and the "Cats" are our Twinjets (4 of them)

3 games planned

#1: Cat & mouse: MovieStar/Twinstar pulls a balloon that others need to touch, coming from behind. Each time touched, 5 Pts.
The MovieStar/TwinStar can do any maneuver he likes. No need for helium inflated balloon for this one.

TESTED and  it FAILED: Twinjet could not get to the balloon

#2: Static: Balloons attached to a poll, to hit.
4 balloons. 0.5m, 2m, 4m, 8 m from the poll
1 Pt per hit (may target to make them explode on this one, with starting from the top in must be done in order)

#3: Ball Trap: TJ takes off, then 5 seconds after, free 1 balloon. The plane needs to make it explode before it gets away.

Attach a needle in the front to do this.
Variation possible:
- Have few planes in the air, whoever makes the balloon explodes first is the winner
